Costco products and an amazing video

As I mentioned previously, I would be providing some "Josh approved" products that are available at Costco locations.  Many of our readers have written in with their suggestions and favorites too, and some of those have been included in this list (thank you to those who wrote in).  Although there are others, this list will give you some idea of what I purchase or recommend.  Additionally, here is some general advice, whether you are shopping at Costco or anywhere else…

Always look for Organics and Non-GMO (click here to see a previous post on GMO). Obviously, not everyone can afford to maintain a solely organic diet, so click here to see a little cheat sheet and find out what the most important items to buy organic are (scroll down until you see item #3, The "Dirty Dozen" image, then click on it and you can print it copy for your shopping trips).

I also wanted to share this amazing video below. It certainly makes us consider the intelligence of other beings we share our planet with.  Hope you enjoy it!

The list...

Fruits & Veggies:

If you can find organic fruits…go for them!  I am fortunate enough to live in a location with a weekly farmers market, so I get many organics from a stand there.  As far as fruits at Costco…Refer to the list of the most important produce items to buy organic.

Earthbound Organic:

Baby Greens
Spinach
Heirloom Lettuce Heads
       Baby Carrots
       Table/Juicing Carrots
Organic Apples
Pesticide Free – Hot House Grown
       Bell Peppers:  Red 6 large
       Bell Peppers:  Red, Yellow, Orange
Tomatoes: (Cherry, On the Vine and Roma)

Refrigerated:

Hannah Organic “Hummus”
Emerald Valley Organic Medium Salsa

Freezer:

I would always recommend eating non-processed, whole foods whenever possible.  However, I do feel that frozen veggies and some fruits (like berries) are fine.  Again, I would prefer organic in any selection.

ByBee Foods: Organic Frozen Peas,  Organic Petite Whole Green Beans
B Bee: Copper Sweet White Corn (sustainable and non-GMO)
Triple Berry Mix
Blueberries
Village Harvest Whole Grain Creations
Madame Edamame (non-GMO)

Dried Goods:

Tru-Roots Organic Quinoa
Tru Roots Organic Sprouted Trio Beans
Organic Golden Flax Meal

Canned Goods:

Organic Amy’s Soups

Breakfast:

Barbara’s Organic Cereals (I of course recommend those with vegan only ingredients).

Snacks:

Organic Kirkland Corn Chips
Food Should Taste Good Multi-grain chips – Non-GMO
Kettle Baked Salt & Pepper Chips – Non-GMO
Trio Bars

Beverages:

Vita Coco Young Coconut Water
Kirkland Organic Soy Milk
Pacific Organic Rice Milk

Nuts: (note: the best nuts you could buy would be raw and organic - but they can be expensive and found at specialty stores or online)

Marantha Organic Almond Butter - It is awesome!
Almonds
Walnuts
Pine Nuts
Pecans

Some of Your Questions Answered

A message from Patricia
Subject: Costco Connection article

Message: Hello Josh - I  just read the article in Costco Connection talking about products they stock. (Life-changer with your picture)  It referred me to your site here, but I don't see anything talking about specific products at Costco.  I'm very interested in what these products are.   Is it possible for you to send me a list of them or???  My granddaughter is a vegan and has shared some of her diet information with me - I'm ready to begin eliminating all white flour, sugar etc. from my diet and whatever other information you have to give me a jump start, I would so appreciate.  Congratulations on your amazing accomplishment - thank you for sharing it.

Hi Patricia,

I will be posting more information on specific products in the future, so look out for that information.  As far as getting a "jump start"…you said you are ready to begin eliminating all white flour, sugar etc.  That's a great place to begin!  There are so many wonderful and healthful alternatives out there today, particularly in the bread, pasta and rice areas.  I would suggest avoiding anything that is "enriched" (i.e something was added to it) and look for whole grain based ingredients.  I'm a big fan of Sprouted Wheat, and one of my favorites when I choose breads are from the Food for Life line.  On the sugar front…I would definitely avoid the white varieties…look for raw organic sugars (many are brown), as well as alternatives for sweetening that are natural.  Although I rarely use sweeteners (I generally get my fix from fruits), when I choose to make something that requires it. I use things like Raw Agave Nectar, Organic Maple Syrup and Coconut Palm Sugar (although that one is hard to find).  Thank you for writing in and keep me posted on how your doing.

Subject: Vegan Recipes

Just read your article in Costco and it was truly amazing.  I would like to know what are a few of your favorite vegan meals and if you have any recipes?

Thanks so much for sharing your story.

Hi Ursula,

I am going to be developing an entire area devoted my favorite recipes (and some videos too)…but here is an easy one…and one of my favorites.  Note: I would look for all of these ingredients in "organic" and adjust amounts to your own taste.  I love wraps.  Here is one I make a lot.

1 Sprouted Wheat Tortilla (click here to see which one)
Big Spoonful of Hummus (flavor of your choice or homemade)
A few Sun-Dried Tomatoes
Some Red Onion
2 large pieces of Romaine (easily can substitute Spinach)
Some Alfalfa Sprouts
Sliced Cucumber
Some nice slices of vine ripe red tomatoes

Start by spreading the Hummus on the tortilla, then chop everything else to desired sizes…roll it up and enjoy…you may need a bib, or at least a few napkins:)

If you want more protein in your wrap, you can easily add a veggie or vegan burger sliced in half so it rolls up well...you could also add beans.

Subject: Costco

Message: I read your article in Costco Connection. I was wondering if you have a grocery list that I can use at Costco, something like product recommendations. I feel whenever I shop at Costco I tend to pickup unhealthy items.

Hi Monika,

I have had an overwhelming amount of requests for a "list", and will be working on coming up some example lists that I will post.  I did want to address the last line of your message.  "I feel whenever I shop at Costco I tend to pickup unhealthy items."  YOU have control over that…so stop picking them up!  The first question I used to ask my clients, was do you brush your teeth everyday?  Their response (actually was often just a stare for a few seconds) was "of course".  I asked them why?  Their response was almost always, because "your supposed to, it's good for you".  It's all about choosing.  You must make the choice.  I'm not trying to be harsh…but like that big shoe company says…"Just Do It".

Subject: Food at Costco

Message: Hi Josh, Saw the story about you in the Costco magazine. I live in a suburb of Phoenix AZ. Don't think it is likely you could "go to the store with me". I would like to find out about your shopping there, the right foods, what is healthy, and recipes etc. Is there a place in your blogs where I can find this information?

Hi Joy,

I was in Phoenix once…really liked it.  If I was there, I would be glad to meet up with you and go shopping!  As I mentioned in another response, I will be posting more and more on product choices and recipes in upcoming weeks, so stay tuned for those.  Costco is certainly one of the stores I would highly recommend.  What other options do you have where you live?  Are there any Natural/Organic groceries or Trader Joe's?  When I lived up North, I could find about 90% of what I was looking for at Costco and Trader Joes.  Let me know by commenting on this post or send me a message through the contact form and I'll try to help further.

Subject: Your illness...

Message: What you have sounds similar to what Joe Cross suffered from in "Fat Sick & Nearly Dead"  Joe turned to juicing as a means of getting healthy, and, low and behold, all his symptoms disappeared as well.   If you've not seen this movie (documentary) I highly recommend it.  I'm just starting my second 30 day juice fast.  In between my last fast and this I've eaten primarily vegetarian and still juiced approx 1 time/day.   I wish you nothing but the very best of luck and health in the 2012 year!

Hi Marie,

Oh how many times I have heard that my life sounded like the Joe Cross documentary "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead".  In fact, at one point, I actually wrote Joe's "people" to share my story, but never heard back.  Since I don't know Joe, or all of the specifics of his illness, clearly the lifestyles we lived were similar, as were the ailments.  All of us our idiosyncratic, so it would be difficult to identify whether or not he and I shared in more than the hives…although we clearly shared in our previous behavior.  I was so elated when I first watched the film, that finally someone more "main stream" (i.e not backed by a company or food product) could demonstrate the power of juicing whole fruits and vegetables.  At times I do a juice cleanse, and then regularly integrate juicing into my regimen. I used to use a high speed juicer, similar to the Breville Joe used, but not long ago picked up the new Omega VRT lower RPM.  It produces juice with far less oxidation (and a bit more pulp as a result).  Even though there is no way around the "clean up" from juicing…I love it!

What we "put in" makes all the difference

Here is a message I received from Denise D.

Subject: Uplifting story

Message: Hi, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your story.  I have not struggled with any of the issues; but my first husband died from what I believe was his body shutting down from too many prescription drugs.  He had hepatitis C but that is not what killed him; his kidney shuts down.  I could see it happening and I tried to convince him to do something different so he could get off of all of the prescription drugs; he believed what the doctors were prescribing would help.

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the story in the Costco Connection and how much I believe we are what we take into and put into our bodies.

Congratulations on your success.

Denise

My Good Friend Pam and I with Yummy Raw Vegan Treats...Now that's High Octane Fuel:)Hi Denise!

Thank you for writing in…and I completely agree with you!  We are what we put into our bodies.  Obviously as a Vegan, the choices of what I put into my own body do not include any animal products.  During the time period of my own illness, there was a point that I recall being on 9 different prescription medications…and although some were meant to combat specific ailments, in combination left me not only unimproved, but with other side effects and issues.  As I began to heal myself and migrated away from the drugs, I felt better and better.  10-months later, I was off of all the medication...and today, as a Vegan I get all of my nutrients from whole and healthful natural foods.  Even for those who come to me with the desire to improve their own health, yet aren't ready, or perhaps willing to try Veganism, my first suggestion is to cut out all artificial ingredients from their diet and begin to integrate whole foods as much as they can (i.e not processed).  Our bodies are amazing, and have the natural ability to heal themselves in a great many situations…However, our bodies are highly complex "machines", and just like any complex machine, they take the right fuel to perform optimally.  Essentially, we were all given Ferrari's as bodies, yet so many go and put the low octane fuel in…Fuel like high-fructose corn syrup (don't even get me started on that!), partially hydrogenated oils, chemicals of all sorts just to name a few.  For those who want to improve, start thinking in those terms…take care of your machine..and it will run much better and much longer:)

Best,

Josh

Re-balance

Here is question submitted by Pam from the Costco article:

Subject: Hives

Message: Congrats on making, striving for and attaining your goals! You are an inspiration. I have a quick question re: the hives you (used to?) get. Were you ever able to connect them to any specific food or additive? Do you still get them? If not, what do you believe caused them? Also, did your hives always start on the same place on your body?  I've been getting a similar rash every few months for last 3 years (for which an allergist told me to take Allegra & Pepcid, along with applying Triamcinalon ointment) but allergy tests were all negative except for dust mites. Rash always starts on left side of my neck then spreads to arms, sometimes legs, and waist. Been to 3 derms, allergist, internist -- but none know why I get it.  My diet is high in fiber, lots of veggies/fruit (~50% organic), virtually dairy free (diagnosed lactose intolerant last year), but I do eat chicken often (~50% free range/organic fed), and fish & red meat ~once a month. Weight in healthy range, as are cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. (Age: 47). Consistent w/cardio, but not great w/strength training.  Just wondering if you attribute disappearance of rash (if it is in fact gone) to anything specific in diet…? Appreciate your thoughts (I know you're not an MD, blah, blah blah... just asking for any connections you were able to make in your life).

Thanks,

P-

p.s. Blog is uplifting. Inspiring me to make some changes myself, which I hope has gone on to inspire others. Glad you're addressing the "balance" thing. Personally, I've discovered my best life is about "ranges" rather than "absolutes." But each of us has to find what works best for ourselves.

Hi Pam, and thank you for writing in and sharing your story.  I certainly can relate to what you are going through!  Regarding the "rash" specifically…I bet you've heard the term "idiopathic" (i.e we have no idea what is causing it)…I sure heard that term a lot!  I spent 39+ months going to doctor after doctor, clinic after clinic…and NEVER finding resolution or even improvement in the condition(s) I was suffering from.  It was finally in May of 2006 that I said "enough was enough" (actually I believe the words may have been less than "G-Rated" - LOL).  After spending 4 long days in the exclusive Mayo clinic…I checked myself out and decided that I would dismiss much of what I had been told in the long process, and focus all my energies on re-balancing my own body…I had nothing to lose, and everything to gain.  Although there was never a definitive answer to what caused my issues…I can say definitively, that the key to healing myself, was the focus I placed on nutrition and exercise.  In the end, I, and many doctors felt that the root cause, was a major imbalance (obviously) and due to a gland called the Thymus…which in my case had grown into a large mass in my chest.  It wasn't my only issue (bad diet, overweight, high cholesterol and on and on played a part as well)

The Thymus has a big role in your immune function:

"The thymus is a specialized organ of the immune system. The thymus produces and "educates" T-lymphocytes (T cells), which are critical cells of the adaptive immune system…The thymus is largest and most active during the neonatal and pre-adolescent periods.  By the early teens, the thymus begins to atrophy and thymic stroma is replaced by adipose (fat) tissue.  Nevertheless, residual T lymphopoiesis continues throughout adult life...CLICK HERE TO READ MORE about the Thymus".

My second to last day at the Mayo Clinic, I distinctly recall the conversation with a Thoracic Surgeon who came to speak with me and review some test results…Although he did not feel the mass was cancerous (at least not at that time), due to the location and size (and inability to adequately biopsy and test it), that we should consider surgical treatment and removal…It was at that moment that I decided to get out of there!  For whatever reason (environmental, diet, lifestyle), my Thymus had grown, as opposed to shrunk (as it does as kids grow)…and I was able to re-balance my own body/system and cause it to literally "shrink", returning to the normal and nearly undetectable adult size.

Although I could write a novel about my own battle, I feel you stated it well with, "life is about "ranges" rather than "absolutes."  I couldn't agree more, but would add the following…our bodies, just like everything else in this Universe are part of symbiotic systems and relationships.  The more our Westernized world has "evolved" and "advanced"…the more we have lost our natural ability to maintain that symbiotic relationship.  Unfortunately, in so many cases (not all cases of course), our wonderfully sophisticated system of medicine often times "forgets" that there may be far simpler solutions than pharmaceuticals.  As you mentioned, I am not an MD, nor am I suggesting that people dismiss the recommendations of doctors…but I am suggesting that either you look at the big picture yourself, or find an integrated physician, who incorporates both traditional western protocols, with logic and understanding of the "whole".  Isn't it interesting that as our society changed over the past couple hundred years, as we became so cutting edge and "smart"…that the increase in disease, sickness and general imbalance has increased in concert with that!

So…how do you reverse that pattern, just as I reversed my illness?  All I can tell you is what my experience was, and what the experience has been with others I have worked with…And, I can assure you that my general approach, will only have the potential of improving your health…Although, I practice a strict Vegan/plant based diet (and will be talking plenty more about that here), the integration of primarily whole foods (i.e not processed) and organics is a wonderful place to begin.  When I began my "transformation", I wasn't Vegan…not even close!  However, even with a diet integrating animal products, my focus on natural and whole foods in combination with exercise facilitated quick results.  I quickly lost weight (eventually close to a hundred pounds in about a year) and the ailments I fought…began to diminish in just a couple months…finally disappearing totally in 10-months.

Fortunately, the availability of organic and natural products continues to increase, and is also becoming more and more affordable too!  And, fortunately there are some big companies (just like Costco), who have made a commitment to those efforts.

So…back to Pam's questions…

"Were you ever able to connect them to any specific food or additive"?

I don't relate what I went through to any one specific food or additive, but more so to the total imbalance within my body (and the related inability for my system to adequately resolve it).

Do you still get them?

No, the hives have never returned.

Also, did your hives always start on the same place on your body"?

Yes, typically they did…under the arms, on the sides of my body…quickly moved to the legs and arms, followed by my back being covered (click here to see what they looked like about 15-minutes into a reaction).  This occurred everyday for 39-months..and about 90% of the time in the evenings.  After a couple hours of the hives, my body would begin to go into anaphylactic shock…and thus began the cycle of cocktails of allergy meds etc.

Thank you again Pam for writing.  I truly hope that you can begin to find some relief and some answers.  Keep me posted on how you're doing…and be strong…you are your own best advocate:)

Best,

Josh
